He was predeceased by: his wife Esther Elizabeth Johnston; his son Robert Johnston; and his brother Charles "Chuck" Johnston (Charlotte). He is survived by: his children, Carolyn Johnston, Edward Johnston (Frances) and Michael Johnston (Candice Justice); his grandchildren, Terra Morganelli (Joe Senese), Robert Morganelli (Bethany Rogers), Russell Johnston, David Johnston and Jenna Johnston; his great grandchildren, Jordan, Nicolaus, Lia and Robby Jr. Dear; and his sibling Gene Johnston (Candy).
