He was predeceased by: his parents, Neal Cole and Nettie Cole (Kutzuk); and his sister Toni Cole. He is survived by: his wife Diane; his children, Brent Cole of Charleston and Elizabeth Ezetta (Ron) of Portland, Oregon; and his grandchildren, Zachary Cole Ezetta and Erin Grace Ezetta.
On Sanibel Island, he was very involved with the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving the island's native flora. Gary loved leading plant identification walks for the Foundation's "Weeds and Seeds" group.
