He was predeceased by: his parents, Oscar Hoelscher and Mary Hoelscher (Brinkman); and his siblings, Velma Randoll, Virginia Randoll, Vernice Kudelka, Virdel Bringle, Vera Rallo, Virgil Hoelscher and Vernon Hoelscher.

He is survived by: his wife Frieda Hoelscher (Sprehe) of Centralia; his children, Karen Ross (Bill) of Centralia, Curtis Hoelscher (Lisa) of Centralia and Larry Hoelscher (Kylene) of Centralia; his grandchildren, Andrew Ross, Benjamin Ross, Lori Riedel (John), Brooke Simonton (Brad), Drew Hoelscher (Chelsea), Kaylee Hoelscher, Rachel Hoelscher, Caleb Hoelscher (Cassidy) and Caitlin Geisler (Michael); his great grandchildren, Nicholas, Jacob, Maci, Cash, Hayden, Harper, Harlyn, Emma, Jarred, Gracelyn, Cooper and Grady; and his brother Verle Hoelscher (Matilda). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions in Vilas's honor may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church.
