He was predeceased by: his parents, Avon and Arlene; and his sister Effie Mae French. He is survived by: his wife Monica D. Cates; his sons, David E. Cates (Lesley) of Troy, IL, Matthew J. Cates (Kimberly) of Collinsville, IL, Jacob A. Cates (Mindy) of Sullivan, MO and Joseph C. Cates (Rachel) of Collinsville, IL; his grandchildren, Katie, Andrew, Kolten, Brett, Taylor, Cole, Jacob Jr., Josh, Ethan, Joseph Jr., Shelly and Jemma; his great grandchild Everleigh; and his siblings, Ernie Cates of Grant Fork, IL and Elaine Villegas of Texas.
