He was predeceased by: his parents, John F. Carter and Bessie Carter (Little); his wife Emma Lou Williams; and his brothers, John D. Carter and Paul Carter.

He is survived by: his children, Lynn Carter of Springfield, Cathy Musgrave (Melvin) of Griggsville, Christy Trimble (Kent) of Jefferson City, MO, Dr. Jeffrey Carter of Texas and Julia Pezold (Anthony) of Ashland; his grandchildren, Andrew Musgrave (Beth), Tyler Musgrave (Sara), Lindsay Dunham (Wes), Genta Trimble, Kyle Trimble (Morgan), Brenton Carter, Reagon Carter, Emma Grace Pezold and Ryder Pezold; and his great grandchildren, Braden, Adam, Ben, Ely, Sam, Ian Musgrave, Leo, Ella, Molly Dunham and Knox Trimble.
