He was predeceased by: his parents, James Coffey and Ida Noon Coffey; his sons, Jim and John Coffey; and his siblings, Paul, Duane, Jim Coffey and Delores Cusac.
He is survived by: his wife Doris Hill; his children, Merle Coffey Jr. (Susan) of Carman, Debra Dowell (Rick) of Ft. Madison and Cathy Coffey of Burlington; his grandchildren, Christy Marshall (Grant) of Ft. Madison, Malinda Carpenter of Ft. Madison, Michael Coffey of Burlington, Kayla Crum (Dan) of Stronghurst, Ashley Schmitt (Ben) of West Point, Jordan Hutchinson of Carman and Dalton Coffey of Carman; and his great grandchildren, Jacob, Dalaney, Jennifer, Jackson, Mason, Gracie, Emma, Rowan and Eleanor. He is also survived by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established for the Carman United Methodist Church or the Parkinson's Foundation.
