He was predeceased by: his parents, Russell, Sr. Smith and Frances Smith Sr. (DeWitt). He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Smith (Eichholz); his children, Timothy Smith (Jennifer) and Tamera Miller (Mark); his grandchildren, Kelsey Larkin (Keith), Wesley Smith (Shelbi), Jonathon Watson, Adam Watson (Jenna), Matthew Watson and Katharine Watson (Christian); and his stepgrandsons, Mark Miller Jr. (Christine) and Michael Miller (Kelly). He is also survived by nine great grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, January 15th 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Meredith Funeral Home (300 S University Ave, Carbondale, IL 62901). A memorial service was held on Wednesday, January 15th 2025 at 12:00 PM at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
