He was predeceased by: his parents, John L. Chester and Elizabeth Chester (Benson); his wife Betty Price; and his son John D. Chester. He is survived by: his children, Beth Chester of Carbondale and Dan Chester (Cynthia) of Carbondale.

Per John's wishes, his body has been donated to SIU School of Medicine for anatomical research.
