He was predeceased by: his father Carl; his former wife Joan Pille; his son Todd Hintz; and his sisters, Lois Clary and Gail Schniers.
He is survived by: his wife Ruth Thole; his children, Timothy Hintz (Susie) of New Baden and Jennifer Hintz of St. Louis; his grandchildren, Cassidy Hintz and Calvin Hintz; his stepchildren, Kathleen Hawthorne, Angela Wiegmann (Mike) and Kenneth Thole (Diane); and his nieces, Crystal Arndt (Rolf) and Vickie Reeves (Dave). He is also survived by six step-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren.
