He was predeceased by: his parents, Wayne Hess and Louise "Polly" Hess; his brother Paul Hess; and his grandchildren, Daniel and Lauren Hess.
He is survived by: his wife Marilyn; his stepdaughter Ashley Raabe of Poplar Grove, IL; his children, Dr. Eric Hess (Kelly) of Fort Collins, CO, Neil Hess (Suhani Patel) of Poplar Grove, IL, Craig Hess (Amy) of Crystal Lake, IL and Jill Sessions (Adam) of Caledonia, IL; his brother Glenn Hess (Brenda); his nephew Adam Hess (Abbie) of Charlotte, NC; his niece Paige Honeycutt (Charles) of Atlanta, GA.; his grandchildren, Adrien Raabe, Olivia, Loral Hess, Garrett, Owen Hess, Quinn and Tristen Sessions; and his siblings-in-law, Carolyn Haley (Jerrold), Deborah Overton (Brett) and Richard Blunt.
He was also the chairman for the district 100 Foundation for Excellence in Education and was a past president of the U of I Alumni Association and the Boone County Medical Society.
