He was predeceased by: his parents, Blaine Vandermark and Marian Vandermark (Greenlee); and his sister Janet Ely (Richard). He is survived by: his wife Wilma Vandermark (Schuldt); his sisters, Anita Huston and Marjorie Kay Dorton; his children, Douglas Vandermark (Kristine) and Amy Wilson (Clifford); his grandchildren, Wade Wilson (Jessica), Bethany Harrmann (Nathan), James Vandermark (Caitlin), Rebecca Wilson (Michael) and Kara Ociepka (Brian); and his great grandchildren, Aubrey, Adelynn, Wesley Harrmann, Charlotte Ociepka, Oliver and Axel Vandermark.

In lieu of flowers, it was Jim's wish to have research donations to the American Diabetes Association made in his name.
