He was predeceased by: his parents, Jerome Lawson and Reta Lawson (Hunter); his brother Jerome "Jerry" Lawson, Jr.; his parents-in-law, Mary Shankland and Jack Shankland; and his brother-in-law Rodney Springer.

He is survived by: his former spouse Robin Harre; his wife Mary Hayes (Shankland); his sons, David Scott Lawson of Merrillville, Michael Adam Lawson (Erin Stretch) of Rolling Meadows and Daniel Shankland Hayes (Tara) of Joliet, Illinois; his brothers, Robert Mark Lawson of Ladue and Phillip Michael Lawson of St. Augustine, Illinois; and his grandchildren, Chase, Owen, Charlotte and William. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials may be made to the St. Augustine Catholic Church, The Avon Lions Club, or the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
