He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Marguerite Crowson Duvall and Carleton Leroy Duvall; his aunt Ermina Crowson Avera; his wife Genevieve Rice Duvall; his children, David L. Duvall, Laura Duvall and Rosemary Speer (John); his grandchildren, David A. Duvall (Jennifer), Jonas Elrod (Mara), John Speer, Genevieve Speer Sumner (John), Paige Duvall and Frances Speer; and his stepson David Freeman (Gwen). He was also cherished by five great-grandchildren.
