He was predeceased by: his wife Dema E. Smith; his son Steven P. Schmidt (Dana Scheller); his sister Joan R. Pack; and his grandchildren, Michael A. Schmidt (Kara) and Jenni Abbott (Sidney).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Youth Haven, Naples, Florida.
