He was predeceased by: his parents, Alex McDonnell and Anne McDonnell; his son Mark Francis McDonnell; his wife Mary McDonnell; and his brothers, Jackie, Alex and Donal.

He is survived by: his sons, Thomas Joseph McDonnell, Christopher McDonnell (Pamela) and TJ McDonnell; his grandchildren, Riley and Colin; and his siblings, Michael and Claire.
