He was predeceased by: his parents, Louis Otto and Gertrude A. Schmidt (Duckwitz); and his brother Norbert Schmidt. He is survived by: his wife Mary Ellen (McDowell); his children, Debra Rippetoe (Delbert), Batesville, Butch' Schmidt (Sharon), Diane Buening (Jerry), Carlyle, Darren Schmidt (Felecia) of Sterling, OK, Denice Hildebrand (Chad) and Ramsey; his sisters, Janet Hamilton and Laverne Brookshire; and his grandchildren, Tim, Allen, Cassie, Dalecia, Hannah, Mike, Matt, Jake, Nick, Whitney, Ashley, Jessica, Erika and Donovan. He is also survived by 29 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Friday, January 31st 2025 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Saturday, February 1st 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A funeral service was held on Saturday, February 1st 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church (6351 N 200th St, Altamont, IL 62411).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Whoo Hoo Sisterhood, Transitions Hospice, Bethlehem Ladies Aid, or Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
