He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Schmittler and Nellie Penrod (Balding); and his siblings, Harlan Schmittler, Bobby Schmittler, Melva Legg and Charles Penrod.
He is survived by: his wife Jeanie Schmittler (Provine) of Albion, IL; his children, Jerri Ballard (Chris) of Fairfield, IL and Brian Powell (Brenda) of West Salem, IL; and his grandchildren, Sophia, Bella and Zion Ballard.
