He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Frates and Marian Frates (Ackerman); and his siblings, Ray Frates, Delbert "Bud" Frates and Carolyn Neil.

He is survived by: his wife Joyce Elaine Stephan; his stepchildren, Gregory Frates (Chris), Charles Frates and Lisa Frates-Weinburger (Mitchell); his grandchildren, Austin Frates, Clare Kafoglis, Albert S. Frates (Melissa), Carrie Frates-Tompkins (Stephen), Dan Weinburger and Dillon Weinburger; his great grandchild James Albert Frates; and his siblings, Delores Olson, Joann Wolfe, Carmene Fosberg, Brent Frates, Sherrie Phillips, Suzie Davis and Mike Frates. He is also survived by his siblings and his many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
