He was predeceased by: his wife Martha Sue Thompson; his parents, Kit Carson and Emma Gay Vineyard; and his children, Richard and Mary (Beth).

He is survived by: his sister Bernice; his children, Carol Sue, John, David, Vanessa and James; and also, Bill, Kit Carson, Jr. (K. C.), James, Larry, Greg, Mark, David and Matthew. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, five children, his grandchildren, and two brothers.
