He was predeceased by: his wife Janet Lee Hurt; and his brother-in-law Ken Lyon. He is survived by: his children, Rodney Vacek of Wyoming, Rhonda Bickford (Mark) of Anamosa and Renee Leonard (Gary) of Center Junction; his grandchildren, Shelby Denniston (Derek), Ryan Leonard (Alyssa) and Dylan Bickford (April); his great grandchildren, Kyson, Teagyn, Naxton Denniston, Lucy, Layton Leonard, Addilynn and Damon Bickford; his sister Pat Lyon of Wyoming; and his close friend Mary Curtin. He is also survived by niece and nephew; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law.

To honor Robert's memory, memorials may be directed to his family to be distributed to his favorite various charities.
