He was predeceased by: his parents, Paul John and Rosina Elizabeth Sanders (Bentler); his son Douglas; his brother Carl Sanders; his brothers-in-law, Conrad Fedler and William "Bill" Morgart; and his niece Julie Morgart Sarra.
He is survived by: his wife Vickie Sanders of West Point; his children, Steve Sanders (Dara) of West Point, Brad Sanders (Cara) of West Point, Pamela Merschman (Eric) of West Point, Rodney Sanders (Shana) of West Point and Kimberly Maki (Dylan) of Juno Beach, Florida; his grandchildren, Logan Sanders, Anaka Sanders, Mya Merschman, Kaleb Sanders, Ella Sanders, Dante Merschman, Lauren Sanders, Mason Sanders, Bianca Sanders and Skyler Sanders; his pet Monster Maki; his siblings, Kenneth Sanders (Judy) of St. Paul, Iowa, Leroy Sanders (Joyce) of Houghton, Donald Sanders (Becky) of West Point, Gregory Sanders of West Point, Vera Morgart of Davenport, Iowa and Patricia Brodar (Thomas) of Delphi, Indiana; and his siblings-in-law, Howard Fedler of West Point, Jane Fedler of Fort Madison and Diane Sanders of Donnellson. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
