He was predeceased by: his parents, Benjamin Hartley and Elizabeth Hartley (Clark); his foster parents, Glenn Wahl and Ferne Wahl of Kalona; his son Douglas Ardell Hartley; and his siblings, Rosemary, Clara (Gwen), Benjamin Jr. and James.
He is survived by: his wife Paula Mast of Washington; his children, Joette Armbruster of Riverside, Michial Hartley (Debbie) of Iowa City, Tony Hartley (Dee) of Cedar Rapids and Ryan Hartley (Deborah) of Phoenix, AZ; and his sister Betty Tinken of Gilmore City, Iowa.. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 35 great- grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren.
