He was predeceased by: his parents, William Hammitt and Myrtle Hammitt (Trueblood); his former wife Marjorie Lea Legg; his daughter Sandi Markley; and his sister Joan Wakeman.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Ann; his children, Crystal Hottman (Tony) of Plainfield, Ind, Randy Hammitt (Karen) of Jesup and Lisa Hammitt of Webster City; his stepsons, Doug Bailey (Nancy) of Webster City, Jim Bailey (Cindy) of Webster City and Kent Bailey (Milissa) of Webster City; and his brother Dale Hammitt (June) of Colorado. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, private family services will be held.
