He was predeceased by: his parents, Leonard Axel and Beulah Faye Carlson (Balsley); his wife Verlijean Boswell; his daughter-in-law Elaine Carlson; his great grandchild Logan Johnson; and his siblings, Maryanna Carlson, Loraine Carlson and Jack Carlson.

He is survived by: his children, Joyce Balla (Kenneth) of Harcourt and Lenny Carlson of Webster City; and his sister Lorene Grandgeorge of Eagle Grove. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren.
