He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Zabel and Viola Zabel (Rohrssen); his wife Irene; his daughter-in-law Monica Zabel; and his siblings, Miriam Bergman, Florene Schweer, Florence Zabel, Rose Blaschke, Ruth Gaede, Lawrence Zabel and Carl Zabel Jr..
He is survived by: his children, Daniel Zabel of Waverly, June Meyer (Ivan) of Tripoli, Ellyne Gray (Doug) of Waterloo, Barbara Gilbert (Donald) of Waverly, Kerri Wellman (Rick) of Waverly and Dawn Parker of Oelwein; and also, Delbert Sommerfelt (Vivian) of Independence, Leroy Sommerfelt of Hazelton, Bertha Willard of Van Nuys and Shirley Sommerfelt of Waterloo. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
