He was predeceased by: his parents, Oscar Smerud and Clara Smerud (Wild); and his children, Gary and Jody. He is survived by: his spouse Alys Heaney; his children, Lori Smerud of Waukon, Iowa, Jeffery Smerud (Kelly) of Monona, Randall Smerud of Waukon, Daniel Smerud (Mikiko) of Hugo and Dale Smerud of Postville, Iowa; his brother Al Smerud (Lorna) of La Crosse, Wis.; and his sisters-in-law, Evelyn Halverson of Caledonia, Minn. and Alice Heaney of Caledonia, Minn.. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren.
