He was predeceased by: his parents, Bernard "Verni" Berns and Eleanora Berns (Taake); his wife Joan Davis; his siblings, Betty Howe (Emmett), Karla Kay Berns and Verdine Berns; his brother-in-law Ray Burke; and his nephews, Kevin Howe and Jeff Berns.
He is survived by: his children, Peggy Monson (John) of Rolling Meadows, IL, Patty Coldebella (Steve) of Rolling Meadows, IL, Pam Donohue of Rolling Meadows, IL and Linc Berns (Jenni) of Rolling Meadows, IL; his grandchildren, Bryan Monson (Kendall), Keith Monson (Julia), Shana Berns, Austin Reed, Mitchell Coldebella, Jimmy Donohue, Ember and Ashley Berns; his great grandchildren, Mary Jane Donohue and Colt Monson; his siblings, Mary Ann Burke of Waukon, Bernard Berns (Eileen) of Waukon and Francis Berns (Muggs) of Waukon; and his siblings-in-law, Mavis Berns-Mathis of Waukon, Lynn Ann Williams of Waukon, Janet Bork (Lou) of West Chicago, IL and John Davis of Mississippi. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
