He was predeceased by: his parents, Bernard Schmitt and Victoria Schmitt (Kuennen); his siblings, Gloria Wagner of West Union, Sally Hensley (Michael) of Waucoma, Susy Kuennen (Ron) of St. Lucas, Debbie Kapnisis of West Union, Kathy Dunt (Brian) of West Union, Mary Bouska (Ken) of Chatfield, MN, Marlene Bouska of Hawkeye and John; his brothers-in-law, Paul Wagner, Gus Kapnisis and Terry Bouska; his nephews, Brady Kuennen, Lee Einck and Jonathan Bouska; his niece Taylor Bouska; his father-in-law Duane "Fritz" Balk; and his siblings-in-law, Karla Faber Niebes and Jim Faber.
He is survived by: his wife Janet Balk; his children, Sara Haught (Justin), Adam (Jill) of Waucoma and Ben (Kalyn) of Waucoma; his grandchildren, Winnie, Millie, Otto Haught, Jacob, Hazel, Vera Schmitt and Corbin Schmitt; his brothers, Mark Schmitt (Karen) of New Hampton and Marvin Schmitt (Traci) of Waucoma; his mother-in-law Wilma Balk of Waucoma; and his brothers-in-law, Ken Balk (Emi) of Marion and Greg Balk (Angela) of Waucoma. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
