He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward James and Dagny Eleanor Jensen Cavanaugh; his wife Helen Mennenga; his sons, Edward, Robert and Daniel; his son-in-law Roger Bulver; his great grandchild Jacob Simon; his siblings, James Cavanaugh and Evelyn Cochran; and his brothers-in-law, Robert Rottinghaus and Roy Cochran.
He is survived by: his close friend Monte Bates; his daughters, Diana Delamore (Doug) of Liberty, MO, Cindy Bamford of Waterloo, Wendy Jordan (Mark) of Waterloo and Becky Buchholz (Gary) of Sumner; and his sister Doris Rottinghaus of Cedar Falls. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
