He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth O'Connell and Bertha Uhlenberg O'Connell; his brothers, Tom, Al O'Connell and Jim Dirkes; and his sister-in-law Sandy Dirkes.

He is survived by: his siblings, Tammy Halvorson (Stan) of Evansdale, Randy O'Connell of Gladbrook, Shirley Lambertson (John) of Iowa Falls and Harvey O'Connell (Debbie) of Waterloo; and his friends, Darrin and Tony Hernandez. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of friends.
