He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfred S. Hekel and Edna Klein Hekel; his wife Alta Stafford; his son Jim Hekel; his grandson Thomas Hekel; and his sisters, Maybeth Knoop and Lorna Wyckoff.

He is survived by: his son William Hekel (Beverly) of Indianola; his grandchildren, Debbie McKenzie (Scott), Cathy Husmann (Mike), Steve Hekel (Raquel), Kristina Hekel, York Hekel (Meridith), Kerri Hekel, Laurie Hekel and Michelle Hekel; and his great grandchildren, Payton, Morgan Husman, Shean, Emma, Ava, William and Kaleeya Hekel. He is also survived by three step-great-grandchildren.
