He was predeceased by: his parents, John Joseph and Karen Jean Schantz (Trier); and his brother-in-law Mike Singleton. He is survived by: his wife Joellen Eversmeyer; his special girls, Megan Smith (Jay) of Davenport, Kori Buffington (Alex) of Muscatine, Britney Klein (David) of Sugar Grove and Bailey Yotter of Wapello; his grandchildren, Hudson Buffington and Olive Buffington; and his siblings, Cindy Singleton of Wapello, Greg Greiner (Cathy) of Wapello, Jeanne Nichols (Paul) of Eatonton, Georgia, Chris Freeman (Kenny) of Irene and Julie Rich of Kirksville, Missouri..

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of John.
