He was predeceased by: his father Clifford Bruning; his wife Jeanne Bruning (Chalek); and his brothers, Barton and Byron. He is survived by: his children, Tom Bruning of Treynor, Iowa and Kim Bruning (Loyal Martin) of Omaha; and his grandchildren, Jasmine Bruning, Kaelin Bruning and Micah Martin. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Treynor, Iowa Fire and Rescue.
