He was predeceased by: his parents, Oliver D. Smotherman (O. D.) and Grace Smotherman (Caudle); his wife Delores Hagen; his daughter-in-law Heide Smotherman; and his grandson Christian Jacob Knight.

He is survived by: his sons, Travis Knight (Peggi) of Slater and Troy Smotherman of Rose Bud, AR; his granddaughters, Sydney and Sierra; and his close friend Jane Bauman of Story City.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name.
