He was predeceased by: his parents, Elvitt Bates and Pearl Bates (Bobst); his siblings-in-law, Gene Franzenburg, Ron Kalina and Joyce Gearhart; his mother-in-law Louise Gearhart; and his nephew Daryl Franzenburg.
He is survived by: his wife Shirley Bates; his son Billy Bates; his stepchildren, Jeff Athey (Julie), Kim Stumpff (Steve), Robin Kannenberg (Mike Beaty), Tammy Athey and Tracy Baumann (Grant); and his siblings, Dorothy Teslik (Dean), Cheryl Kalina and Brad Bates. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.
