He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Joseph and Donna Jean Merten (Milleman); and his brother Donald Merten. He is survived by: his wife Deb Roberts of Spencer, IA; his children, Dallas Merten (Melissa) of Fostoria, IA, Dangie (Jason) of Bennington, NE and John Noehren (Amy) of Gilbert, AZ; his grandchildren, Maxwell, Murphy Merten, Samantha and Jack Jansen; and his siblings, David Merten of Royal, IA, Cindy Meyerdirk of Spirit Lake, IA and Melinda Carlson of Sioux City, IA. He is also survived by other relatives; and many friends.
