Grover William Linden Obituary
Grover William “Bill” Linden, passed away at the age of 89 on December 18, 2022, following a brief illness. Services will be held at a later date in Sioux City, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s or DAV (Disabled American Veterans) in Bill’s memory.
Bill was born in Sioux City, Iowa on June 28th, 1933, to Valois and Margaret Linden. He was a 1951 graduate of Heelan Catholic High School and attended Morningside College and the University of Iowa. Near the end of the Korean War, Bill served in the US Submarine Service and later in the US Army as a Russian translator with the NSA. Bill married Barbara Wakeman of Union County South Dakota on July 23rd, 1955.
Following his military service, Bill and his growing family returned to Sioux City where he found his calling in the trades as a sheet metal worker and heating and air conditioning specialist. Bill was active in the Union and was a shop steward.
Bill and Barb raised their six children in Sioux City, then Cedar Rapids and eventually moved to Solon, Iowa where they operated Solon Heating & Air .
Bill was an accomplished and creative furniture maker and woodworker. Bill’s stained glass creations grace the homes of his extended family and are beautiful reminders of his many talents. He enjoyed high school and college sporting events throughout his life. Anyone who met him could easily guess he was a life-long Hawkeye fan.
On March 23rd, 1995 Bill married Kathleen Anderson Bogenreif . Together they built their lake home on Bever Lake near Garfield, Arkansas. Kathleen passed away in 2012.
In 2018 Bill returned to Solon and enjoyed being closer to his children.
He is survived by his five children, Theresa Wood (Jere), Tim Linden (Patty), Laura Deskin (Mike), James Linden (Kim) and Peggy Linden; one daughter-in-law, Jill Linden; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five step-children, Gary Bogenreif, Sherry Anders (Bill), Lori Wilczik, Julie Umbarger (Mike), Margee Hendrickson (David) and their families; four siblings, JoAnne Emerson, Bayne Linden (Janette), Tom Linden (Linda), Andrea Pope; and one brother-in-law, Michael Verschoor.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Linden; son, David Linden; great-grandson, Clayton Henning; parents, Valois Linden and Margaret Linden (Trapp); siblings, Valois Linden, Jr., Karlyn Osborne and Virjean Verschoor.
The family wishes to thank his visiting nurse, his housekeeper and the staff at the Veteran’s Medical Center, Iowa City for their kindness and care of Dad.
