He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Schaefer and Ruth Schaefer; and his former wife Dorothy Van Pell. He is survived by: his wife Linda Hanchett of Sigourney; his children, Robin Mellos (Nick) of Sayreville, Suzanne Engel (Bruce) of West Burlington, Gary Schaefer (Angie) and Brian Schaefer (Christy) of Fort Madison; his grandchildren, Peter, Samantha, Megan (Alex), Jordyn, Sarah, Matthew, Nadine, Madelynn and Andrew; his brother Walter Schaefer (Carol) of Lakewood; and his stepdaughters, Heather and Stacey.

A general memorial fund has been established.
