He was predeceased by: his parents, Jess Mathis and Angela Mathis (Whitmore); his wife Lucille Swanson; and his brothers, Ernie, Harold "Sandy", Howard and Don Mathis.
He is survived by: his sons, Greg Mathis (Francoise) of Council Bluffs, IA, Kirk Mathis (Karen) of West Burlington, IA, Tim Mathis of Shenandoah, IA and Jeff Mathis (Margie) of Marshalltown, IA; his grandchildren, Ben Mathis (Dawn) of Papillion, NE, T. J. Mathis (Jill) of Danville, IA, Jeremy Mathis (Leonela) of Guayaquil, Joel Mathis (Becky) of Libertyville, IL, Jessica Reicks (Jon) of Poulsbo, WA and Elli Roberts (Caleb) of Olathe, KS; and his great grandchildren, Ashton Reicks, Sebastian Mathis, Lucy Mathis, Logan Mathis and Gracelyn Roberts. He is also survived by his sons and now grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
