He was predeceased by: his parents, Lewis Valen and Isabelle Valen (Tweedt); his siblings, Laverne, Robert, Arlene Bygness and Shirley Juhl; and his grandson Stephen Dalton.

He is survived by: his wife Judy Valen; his son Jeff (Mieca Valen); his grandchildren, Nathan, Hannah, Grace (Wyatt Gatrost), Zachary and Zinash of Owatonna, MN; his son Jarett (Traci Valen); his grandchildren, Parker and Kylla of Spirit Lake, IA; his daughter Jennifer (Sean Dalton); and his grandchildren, Clare, Mara (Justin Boone), Reisa, Josh and Caleb of Littleton, CO..

Visitation was held on Monday, January 6th 2025 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the First Lutheran Church (1525 Three Cross Rd, Milford, IA 51351). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 7th 2025 at 10:30 AM at the same location.
