He is survived by: his wife Sherry; his sons, Jeff Cates of Rockwell City and Jon Cates (Amanda) of Lima, NY; his stepchildren, Dan Thompson of Rockwell City and Michelle Brown (Rich) of Rockwell City; his grandchildren, Gage, Menley Cates of Rockwell City, Brandon Cates of St. Cloud, MN, Myren Keller, Mara Elken of Jefferson, Abrey, Kinnick, Louden Cates of Lima, NY, Ryan, Patrick, Eric Brown of Rockwell City, Danielle Thompson of Early, Cassi Thompson of Carroll, Kyli, Cody Thompson of Rockwell City, Sonya Holmgaard (Brown) of Lake City, Tonia Popp (Brown) of Lake View and Christian Balke Thompson of Farnhamville; his siblings, Donnie Cates of Auburn and Pat Gosch (Steve) of Sac City; his former wife Marla Jane Foster; and his children, James Joseph "Ponch", Jeffrey Harlan "Murph", Jonathan Eugene "Clink" and Janelle Ranae "Dink" (Jerredd) of Jefferson. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
