He was predeceased by: his parents, Herman Engen and Margaret Van Engen (Otten); his wife Alida Jongerius; and his son Barry. He is survived by: his children, Lyle Van Engen (Joyce) of Rock Valley and Brenda De Boer (Don) of Sanborn, Iowa; his grandchildren, Jason Van Engen, Lindsay Thooft, Nikki Van Engen, Tricia Van Vugt (Kyle), Darci Diekevers (Curtis), Michael Van Engen (Michelle), Chris De Boer, Matt De Boer (Melissa), Brendon De Boer (Rachel) and Aaron De Boer (Maria); and his great grandchildren, Briahnna, Bailee, Mason Thooft, Kyson, Breckyn, Makartlee Van Vugt, Ryker, Attleigh, Dempsen Diekevers, Madilee, Mavrie and Maela Van Engen.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be given to Hope Haven's Wheelchair Ministry.
