He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Altena and Effie Altena (Broek); his wife Albertha Van; and his sister Marlene Te Slaa of Rock Valley. He is survived by: his children, Howard Altena (Lynette) of Doon and Garneth Kuiper (Kevin) of Sioux Falls, SD; and his grandchildren, Tricia Mulder (Brian), Troy Altena (Michelle), Evan Altena (Kim), Teissa Green (Casey), Paige Vanden Bosch (Bret) and Lucas Kuiper. He is also survived by his son, grandsons and great-grandsons.
In the midst of discomfort from stroke effects and separation from his family at the nursing home during COVID-19, he continued to be a source of joy to everyone around him.
Memorials may be directed to the Rock Valley Christian School Bus Fund, Western Christian High School and Sioux Falls Christian School.
