He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Kats and Christina Kats (Vander Plas); his wives, Sharon Lee Sandbulte and Elaine Kooiman (Smit) of Denver; his daughter Ellen Flikkema; his children-in-law, Rod Flikkema and Tonya Kooiman; and his siblings, John, Paul, Harley, Larry and Joanna Groeneweg.
He is survived by: his children, Loren Kooiman (Lora) of Doon, IA, Darryl Kooiman (Martha) of Lynden, WA, Don Kats (Julie) of Rock Valley, IA, Roberta Attema (Gaylan) of Zeeland, MI, Ken Kooiman (Judy) of Sanborn, IA, Daryl Kats (Ila) of Rock Valley, IA, Arlan Kooiman (Laurie) of Hospers, IA, Connie (Jeff), Sheila Kreykes (Brett) of Rock Valley, IA, Jerry Kats (Sandy) of Escondido, CA and Kaye Sjaarda (John) of Valley Springs, SD; and his siblings, Gerrit Kats (Esther), Ken Kats (Hendrene) of Rock Valley, IA, Alvin Kats (Evie) of Sheldon, IA, Alta Groeneweg, Betty Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley, IA and Wanda Siebelink of Grandville, MI.. He is also survived by 46 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren.
The Kats family prefers memorials be directed to Rock Valley Christian School or Western Christian High School in Hull.
