She was predeceased by: her parents, Fred Koch and Theresa Koch (Stickfort); her former husband Norman Messer; her husband John Akkerman; her grandson Scott Schauls; her siblings, Bill Koch (Margaret), Herman Koch (Margaret), Alfred Koch (Opal) and Vertina "Vernie" Bolman (Arnold); her nephews, Freddie Bolman, Leon Koch and Bobby Koch; her niece Verna Mae Bolman; and her nephews-in-law, Robert Dufel and Irvin Newell.

She is survived by: her children, Dale Akkerman (Denise) and Berdell Schauls (Mark); her grandchildren, Amanda Akkerman, Alaina Flater (Darren), Kyle Schauls (Jessica), Dustan Eilderts (Emileigh) and Kelly Eilderts; and her great grandchildren, Ava Akkerman, Maxwell, Eli, Alivia Flater, Casey Schauls, Kaden, Kodey and Kendall Eilderts.
