He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard O. Mertz and Evelyn Mertz (Salts); his parents-in-law, Robert L. and Corrine Dunn; his daughter De Anne Schaaf; his siblings-in-law, Jane Ann Sprinkle and Robert Lynn Dunn; and his nephew Trevore Dunn.

He is survived by: his wife Linda Mertz of Red Oak; his children, Diana Jacobsen (Dallas) of Peterson, IA and Doug Mertz (Heather Avila) of Corning, IA; his son-in-law Jeff Schaaf of Griswold, IA; his grandchildren, Colton, Caleb Schaaf of Griswold, IA, Tielar, Tristan Jacobsen of Blair, NE, McKenna and Tanner Mertz of Red Oak, IA; his sister Marilyn Burnett of Missouri Valley, IA; and his sister-in-law Daleth Greer of LaVista, NE. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the family.
