He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Marvin Gilbert and Mildred Gilbert (Pulver); his wife Sharon Van Ryswyk (Jabaai); his children, Craig Van Ryswyk (Brenda) of Baxter, Brenda Smith (Marc) of Newton, Amanda Van Ekeren (Brian) of Prairie City and Dana Warrick; his grandchildren, Kylie Mixer (Jase), Bryce Van Ryswyk, Kaylin Van Ryswyk, Jacob Smith, Jenna Smith, Christian Van Ekeren, Michael Van Ekeren, Aden Van Ekeren, Alex Van Ekeren and Elijah Van Ekeren; his siblings, Malinda Shafman, Mike Gilbert, Marcella Prosch and Bruce Gilbert; and also Mildred Gilbert.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Prairie City First Reformed Church, Jasper County Vietnam Veterans, and the Monroe American Legion.
