He is survived by: his children, Gayla Laackmann of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Ronald Laackmann (Cristina) of Portsmouth, Iowa, Charles Bird of Hancock, Iowa and Angela Hargens (Travis) of Avoca, Iowa; his girlfriend Patty Neuman of Persia, Iowa; and his siblings, Phil Bird (Jane) of Overland Park, Kansas, Suzanne Franco (Frank) of Omaha, Nebraska, Roxanne Shepard (Brian) of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Michael Bird of Harlan, Iowa. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
