He was predeceased by: his parents, William Phineous and Hazel York Yates; his wife Beatrice Yates; and his brother Dwight Yates. He is survived by: his former wife Patricia Carter; his son Tim Yates of Adel, Iowa; his stepchildren, Deb Cole (Denny) of Drakesville, Diana Christian (Erik) of Ottumwa, Tim Davis (Rhonda) of Slater and Allen Davis of Ottumwa; his grandchildren, Lilah Yates, James Benge (Kellie), Jason Werts (Angie Thomas), Ashley Hoppenworth (Barret), Tanner Davis and Bradley Davis; his great grandchildren, Zachary Benge, Colby Benge, Nick Brandt, Eric Brandt, Piper Hoppenworth, Madden Hoppenworth and Wrenly Hoppenworth; and his cousins, Jane Yates of Bloomfield and Linda Johnson of Ottumwa.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Good Samaritan Society – Hospice in Ottumwa.
