He was predeceased by: his parents, Michael R. Hess and Jennie May Hull Hess; his wife Lois Van Zante; and his sisters, Helene Hess, Mary Gable and Anna Phillips.
He is survived by: his children, Joyce Hess of Oskaloosa and Alan Hess (Terri) of Swisher; his grandchildren, Arwen Rhodes, Erica Harold and Andrea Sherman; his great grandchildren, David Rhodes, Jr., Desiree Craig, Xavier Harold-Heine, Xander Harold-Heine, Hayden Sherman, Kayla Sherman and Lucas Sherman; and his great great grandchildren, Raylon Craig and Taggert Craig.
